Im August prophezeihte ich Apples Hardware-Zukunft. Hieraus ein Auszug:

"Ein iBook-Tablet, ein Bluetooth-Kuli, mit dem ich im Büro den ganzen Tag auf normalem Papier herumschreibe und der Mac alles mitprotokolliert, eine kleine Digicam. Und wenn das alles nicht machbar ist, dann bitte wenigstens drahtlose Tastatur und Maus und ein Bluetooth-Nachrüstkit für iBook und co. Wann? Anfang Dezember wäre recht passend. "

Es schaut sehr danach aus, als könntes es morgen mit diesem Digital Lifestyle Device soweit sein: eine Mischung aus iPod und iBook, etwa in A5-Größe, Farbdisplay. Firewire, WiFi und Bluetooth (IP-Connectivity je nachdem ob ein Bluetooth-Handy in der Nähe ist oder das Ding an einem Mac angesteckt ist, selbiges für den Kontakt mit Druckern und anderen Rendezvous-tauglichen Geräten). Bedienung via Inkwell-Stift. Automatische Synchronisierung von Kalender und Emails, aber auch MP3s und Fotos (mit dem neuen iPhoto) - auch über .Mac. Sherlock und ein neuer Apple-Webbrowser werden auch vorhanden sein, und besonders ersterem kommt eine stärkere Bedeutung als bisher zu.

MPEG-4 Filme können abgespielt werden (DivX mit kleineren Hacks der Open Source Community), und eventuell hat das Gerät (ob es nun iPad, iWalk, iTab oder ganz anders heisst) eine eingebaute Digicam. Letzteres glaube ich eher nicht, das erledigt besser das weniger klobige SonyEricsson-Handy - ausser iChat kommt bald mit Video-Conferencing Funktionen.

Im Gerät stecken vielleicht G3 mit 500MHz und eine 20GB-Platte, laufen wird das System unter OSX (wohl aber in einer gestreamlineten Version, in der zur Performanceoptimierung vieles deaktiviert ist).

Als (Business-)PDA ist das Gerät nicht zu verstehen - eher als Videoplayer & Webbrowser fürs Sofa und Unterwegs, als tragbares Fotoalbum, als Schnittstelle zwischen zahlreichen digitalen Geräten rundherum, sei es Digicam, Handy, Palm, iPod oder iMac. Plug&Play, nur ohne Plug - Bluetooth, WiFi und Rendezvous sei dank.

Aber vielleicht irre ich mich. In 24h werden wir es wissen.

What the Segway community needs to do immediately, if it is to survive, is to cop a more "macho" image. Borrow a page from the Harley Davidson folks, and throw on a leather jacket. Liberally apply flame decals to your Segway. Find a way to make the Stirling engine extremely loud."

Dies meint stevenf, und hat damit nicht ganz unrecht. Segways sind cool, aber ihre Besitzer sind alles andere als hot.

Eine Alternative zu NetNewsWire, FeedReader & co könnte folgendes Projekt darstellen: "nntp//rss acts as a gateway/bridge enabling your existing NNTP newsreader to read RSS syndicated content. It is a Java application, and can be deployed either on a end-user's desktop, or on a centrally located server for group access. The first release is 0.1, but does contain a full feature set, with support for both HTML-enabled (Outlook Express, Netscape, Mozilla) and non-HTML enabled newsreaders (Free Agent)."
